Esther Byrne

Today I’m starting a new writing challenge, in the form of writing a 100-word creative non-fiction story every day for five days: https://www.nicolebreit.com/555challenge/

It is my first foray into non-fiction, and I am really enjoying the chance to do something new. I love writing challenges as they are a way to ‘keep my instrument in tune’ and expand my writing skills beyond what I would normally do.

I will update the site each day with what I have written.

For Day One, the prompt given related to special objects from childhood, particularly ones that evoke memories. I decided to write about the cardboard box I played with as a child, and the many adventures it took me on…

The Box of Stories

Hours of play within walls of card; stories hidden within, denouncing its status as rubbish. The box was more than a place to put; it was a place to play.

Playmobil figures acted out novels; created fairytales… danced in villages of endless rain.

In the corner, there stood a pine cone bejewelled with sequins; a makeshift Christmas tree stuck together with glue and dreams.

When I played with that box, there were no limits.

My imagination took me beyond the everyday to any world in which I wished to roam.

The box made me a writer.

It was a spark.
